Menstrual Cup Pros

how does a menstrual cup work

Here are some pros or potential advantages with using menstrual cups:

Cost-Effective:

Menstrual cups can be worn for up to 12 hours before needing to be emptied and reinserted, allowing you to wear the same cup for multiple periods. This means you won’t have to buy new supplies as often, which can save you a lot of money in the long run. Menstrual cup prices range from $10 – $50. Once you’ve bought it, there are no recurring costs, unlike pads or tampons. And they last for a long time. My favourite menstrual cup is the Rubi Cup priced under $30 and includes free shipping avaliable here.

Eco-Friendly:

Menstrual cups are reusable, which means they generate less waste than disposable menstrual management products like pads and tampons. This makes them an eco-friendly option and helps reduce your impact on the environment.

Comfort & Lifestyle:

Menstrual cups are designed to be comfortable to wear and can be worn without any discomfort or leakage.  They are also discreet and virtually undetectable when worn. They can be worn comfortably out and about, doing sports and swimming; meaning your period will be less of a disturbance to your life!

Reusable:

Menstrual cups are reusable, meaning you can use them for several years with proper care. This makes them an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable menstrual products.

Extended Wear Time:

Menstrual cups can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on your flow. This means you can go longer without needing to empty or change your menstrual protection, providing convenience and freedom.

Increased Capacity:

Menstrual cups generally hold more fluid than tampons or pads. This makes them suitable for individuals with heavy flows or for overnight use, reducing the need for frequent changes.

Leak-proof:

When inserted properly, menstrual cups create a seal against the vaginal walls, minimizing the risk of leaks. This can provide peace of mind, especially during physical activities, sports, or overnight.

Lower Risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS):

Menstrual cups do not pose the same risk of TSS as tampons, as they do not absorb the vaginal fluid. TSS is a rare but serious condition associated with prolonged tampon use.

Better for Vaginal Health:

Menstrual cups are typically made of medical-grade silicone or other safe materials, which do not disrupt the vaginal pH or natural moisture levels. They don’t cause dryness or irritation like some disposable products.

Less Odor:

Unlike pads or tampons, menstrual cups don’t expose menstrual fluid to air, which can reduce the likelihood of odor. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who are more sensitive to odor during their periods.

Empowering:

Using a menstrual cup can help individuals develop a better understanding of their menstrual cycle and their own body. It promotes a sense of self-awareness and self-care.

Menstrual Cup Cons

Here are some cons or potential challenges with using menstrual cups:

Learning Curve:

Using a menstrual cup for the first time can be a bit tricky and may require some practice to properly insert and position it. It can take a few cycles to get used to the technique, menstrual cup folds and becoming confident using one.

Removing a menstrual cup can be messy, especially if you are not familiar with the process or if the cup is overly full. It’s important to be prepared and have access to clean water and sanitary facilities when emptying and cleaning the cup.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

Menstrual cups require thorough cleaning between uses. This involves washing with mild soap and water or using a designated menstrual cup cleanser. Some individuals may find this extra step inconvenient or time-consuming, especially when in public restrooms.

Limited Accessibility:

While menstrual cups are becoming more popular, they may not be as readily available as disposable products in certain areas or retail stores. But they’re very accessible and can be purchased online.

Fit and Comfort Issues:

Menstrual cups come in different sizes and shapes, and finding the right fit for your body can be a trial-and-error process. Some individuals may experience discomfort or difficulty finding a cup that fits comfortably or suits their unique anatomy.

It’s worth noting that these cons may not apply to everyone, as individual experiences with menstrual cups can vary. With time, practice, and finding the right cup for your body, many of these challenges can be overcome.

While menstrual cups offer numerous advantages such as cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and comfort, it’s important to consider potential challenges like the learning curve and maintenance involved in order to make an informed decision about whether they are the right menstrual product for you. I’d encourage any teen or woman to give a menstrual cup a try; you can wear them comfortably while you’re out and about, engaging in sports or swimming, ensuring that your period won’t disrupt your daily activities as much!
